Ipe
Ipe (pronounced ee-pay) is a beautiful hardwood found throughout Central and South America. It is a superior wood used for outdoor applications, ideal for furniture or decks and patios. It is incredibly hard and strong, and because of its density, it is naturally resistant to decay and insects. If you compare the hardness of ipe to teak (an excellent wood used for outdoor applications as well), using the Janka Hardness Test, teak has a respectable result of 1050, and ipe has a result of 3680. This test measures the pounds of force required to embed a 0.44 inch steel ball into the wood to half of the ball’s diameter. This shows ipe is over three times harder than teak.
To maintain the rich red brown colour, ipe should be oiled a few times per year, using a soft cloth and hardwood oil. If left unoiled, it will age to a silver grey tone. For regular maintenance, just wipe with water and a mild soap such as dish soap. Ipe will last up to 25 years unoiled, and much longer (50 or more years) if maintained with a good quality hardwood oil.
Warranty covers against breakage and overall structural integrity for a period of one year from the date of purchase, under normal and reasonable use. Ipe will fade in colour over time and this is not covered as part of the warranty.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is naturally rust and corrosion resistant. Our furniture is made with 304 stainless steel, with 316 stainless steel as an option to provide additional corrosion resistance (this is recommended if you are in a coastal or salt water environment).
Just wipe the surface with a cloth (following the grain of the stainless steel) with mild soap and warm water, followed by a rinse with clean warm water. Wipe dry with a clean cloth to prevent water spots. For fingerprints use a glass cleaner sprayed on the cloth, and wipe the sprayed cloth on the stainless steel. If general cleaning is maintained, the stainless steel will have a long lifetime and maximum resistance to corrosion.
Under normal and reasonable use, we offer a three year warranty on the stainless steel frames. All decisions regarding defects or misuse rest with Honing Design. During the warranty period (starting at the date of purchase) Honing Design will, at its discretion, repair or replace stainless steel. The warranty does not cover rust spotting after a period of one year.
All furniture is manufactured in our shop outside of Shelburne, Ontario.
